AVOIDING COMMON ERRORS
If you are planning to e-file your return, keep the following thoughts in mind:
The IRS uses a Master File of last names, Social Security Numbers, and dates of birth when checking your electronic return. This Master File is based upon what is on file with the Social Security Administration. Mismatches between your return data and the Master File will cause a rejection to come back for the return. If this is your first time e-filing, use the information as it appears on your annual Social Security Statement.
The above also applies to dependents. Furthermore, if you are claiming the Child Tax Credit make sure the child was under age 17 at the end of 2016. The return will come back rejected if this is not the case.
In order to use a self-select PIN to sign your return you must have your AGI (adjusted gross income) from last year's return or the PIN you used on last year's return (if you filed it using a paperless signature).
